Mark Rubbo
GCSAA Golf Course Superintendent
Mark Rubbo was born in 1969 in Paoli, Pennsylvania. Mark developed interests in both golf and the outdoors at a young age. At home he could be found playing golf in the yard on the various improvised layouts the neighborhood kids could imagine. Appreciation and passion for nature grew as Mark spent many childhood summer days assisting on his grandfather’s farm. In 1985, as a sophomore at Henderson High School in West Chester, PA, Mark successfully combined his two greatest interests when he started as a groundskeeper at nearby Whitford Country Club. He worked summers at Whitford Country Club through the remainder of high school and college. Mark and fellow Whitford crew members would be out every Monday after work playing the course they groomed. After graduating from Henderson in 1987, it was off to Pennsylvania State University to earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Agronomy.
After graduation, Mark moved to the Pocono Pines, PA. He served as Golf Course Superintendent of Timber Trails Golf Club, a charming nine hole layout in a beautiful setting. Responsibilities also included serving as Assistant Maintenance Superintendent of Lake Naomi Club. The desire for longer golf seasons, career growth and being closer to family brought Mark back to this area. In late 1994, Mark came to Spring Ford Country Club to work for and learn from Dana Getty, the club’s veteran Superintendent. Upon Dana’s retirement, Mark was promoted to the position of Golf Course Superintendent in January 1998. While at Spring Ford, he has been part of many exciting projects from general course improvements, bunker renovations and a complete irrigation system replacement.
Through continuing education, Mark maintains a Class A Superintendent status, and he has been active with the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America for twenty years. He currently holds the officer level position of Secretary of the Philadelphia Association of Golf Course Superintendents. As the Philadelphia Association of Golf Course Superintendents’ Chapter Delegate he acts as liaison between the local and national associations.
Mark will be married to his wife Cathie for eighteen years this November. On the course he is often accompanied by Koda, one of their pets.
